The Importance of Fun
Building on the gentle teaching model, activities and celebrations at Disability Supports are used as an opportunity for companionship and healthy interaction. Almost every night is a social one. Birthdays are celebrated with an evening party for all those born in a certain month. Cookouts are popular and frequent. And seasonal holidays are never missed, with special event around May Day, Independence Day, and a community-wide Oktoberfest event.
Music
Few things bring as much joy as hearing a favorite song and moving to the beat. So life at Disability Supports includes lots of opportunities to tune into fun. A disco ball hangs from the ceiling, a karaoke machine is within easy reach — as is a well-stocked jukebox — a popular dance DVD gets played over and over, and on many afternoons a piano is wheeled into the center of the room for staff-led sing alongs.
Exercise
It might be a beach ball game of catch, a chair dance or the smallest but most consequential decision to move to another side of the room. Consoles and shelves full of sports equipment are ready for play and never feels like exercise.
Trips
Traveling off-campus is a regular part of activities at Disability Supports. These trips include annual outings to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson, World’s of Fun in Kansas City, Mo., and Rock Springs, a 4-H camp located in the beautiful Flint Hills.
“Fun is an essential part of what we do because fun helps combat feelings of anguish and depression.” - Sheila Goscha, Vice-President/COO
